SIDNEY TEBBUTT, in association with his younger brother, went to Saxony in 1881 and constructed a lace-curtain factory, which they worked for many years.
On his return to England he established a steam laundry at Leamington and later a similar business at Southampton. In recent years he acted as a consulting engineer.
He served his apprenticeship at Nottingham and, after a short time in the drawing office of Messrs. John Fowler of Leeds, acquired his knowledge of lace machinery as assistant manager to Messrs. James Carver at Nottingham.
Mr. Tebbutt served continuously on the Southampton Borough Council for twenty-two years.
His death occurred on 21st March 1927 at the age of seventy-two years.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1895 and contributed a paper on steam laundry practice in 1898.

"The Late Mr. S. Tebbutt.—We regret to note the death, on March 21 last, at his home in Southampton, of Mr. Sidney Tebbutt. Born in 1854, he was educated partly by private tutorship, and partly at Tettenhall College, Staffordshire. Upon leaving school, he served an apprenticeship of five years in the shops of Messrs. Manlove, Alliott and Company, of Nottingham. In 1879, Mr. Tebbutt was appointed to the post of assistant manager to Mr. James Carver, of Nottingham, and, while in that capacity, he was engaged in erecting machinery in Scotland and in Germany. After a brief stay in England, upon the completion of this work, Mr. Tebbutt returned to Germany to supervise the erection, and subsequent working, of the lace curtain factory of Messrs. T. I. Birkin and Company, at Oetsnitz, Saxony. On his return to this country, after spending some considerable time in Germany, he constructed and supervised the working of a steam laundry at Leamington, Warwickshire. Mr. Tebbutt was elected to full membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1895."
