Sidney Clifford, who died on 31st July 1955, at the age of 81, was educated at Bristol Grammar School, Bristol University and the Merchant Venturers Technical College.
He served his apprenticeship from 1890 to 1897 with George Adlam and Sons, Ltd., of Bristol, and then joined G. J. Worssam and Son, Ltd., London, as a Draughtsman, becoming successively Assistant Works Manager in 1901, and Works Manager in 1902.
From 1906 to 1913 he was Manager of J. Hadley and Co., Birmingham. He then returned to Bristol as Assistant Engineer in the employ of Messrs. W. D. and H. O. Wills and in 1915 became Chief Engineer of the company, responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of buildings, machinery and power generating plant in six large factories in various parts of the British Isles. He retired in 1939.
He became a Bristol City Councillor in 1938 and later served for a time as the City's Sheriff. He was elected Chairman of the Port of Bristol Authority in 1952 and an Alderman of the City of Bristol.
Mr. Clifford was President of the Bristol Association of Engineers in 1928. He was elected a Member of this Institution in that year and served as Chairman of the Western Branch from 1933 to 1934, during which time he was a Member of Council.
