Wholesale bakers
1927 Public company incorporated to take over what was claimed to be the country's leading producer of slab cake[1]. Its success had been achieved without advertising or use of travellers and the company was largely unknown to the general public[2]
1931 Expansion of the main factory at Smethwick and planned extension in Dublin[3]
1938 Multiple-store customers were cutting their orders as they were obtaining more supplies from their own bakeries[4]
1939 Created a large sales organisation to win business from general stores in view of the loss of custom to the multiples[5]
1942 Acquired more shares in the main subsidiary George Kemp Ltd[6]
By 1945 the company owned George Kemp Ltd in London (manufacturer of biscuits) and Scribbans-Kemp (Scotland) Ltd, which had a factory at Leith making cakes and biscuits, and Scribbans-Kemp (Northern Ireland) which also made cakes and biscuits; also owned the transport company Hurst and Payne of Birmingham, and Meesons, retailers in Manchester[7]
1946 Name changed to Scribbans-Kemp Ltd[8]
1947 Established a research department under the control of a distinguished scientist[9]
1951 Expanded the retail side of the business with the acquisition of a further 31 shops[10]
1952 Acquired Barker and Dobson of Liverpool, confectionery makers[11]
1956 Acquired Gardiners Ltd of Northern Ireland and Bensons of Bury and A. E. Smith and Co of Manchester[12]
1957 Solartron Electronic Group were developing and manufacturing for sale the electronic check-weigher developed in the company's laboratories. Acquired London Kiosks Ltd[13]
1960 Acquired cake makers Oliver and Gurden of Oxford[14]
1961 Acquired H. H. and S. Budgett of Bristol, wholesalers and retailers, and Hughes Brothers of Liverpool, makers of processed meat products[15]
1964 Sold Kemps Biscuits to Wright's Biscuits[16]
1969 Sold the bakery business to J. Lyons and Co including the Smethwick factory; acquired several small chains of stores[17]. Name changed to S & K Holdings.[18]
1972 Name changed to Barker and Dobson[19]
