SAMUEL WILLIAM BETTONEY was from 1920 chief engineer to the General Accident, Fire, and Life Assurance Corporation, Ltd. He had a special knowledge of the operation and maintenance of boiler plant.
Mr. Bettoney was born in 1872 at Maryport, Cumberland, where he served a five years' apprenticeship, terminating in 1892, with Messrs. Stanfield, Cuthell and Company, engineers and boilermakers.
He then went to sea as third engineer on steamships of the Isle of Bardsey Steam Shipping Company, of Cardiff, and a year later joined the Holme Line, of Maryport; later he was promoted to be second, and finally chief, engineer.
In 1907 he was appointed engineer surveyor to the Vulcan Boiler Insurance Company, of Manchester, and held this position until 1920, when he took up his appointment with the General Accident Assurance Corporation.
His death occurred at Harrow on 18th July 1936.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1922, and was transferred to Membership later in the same ran
