SAMUEL PERRY went to Australia at an early age and joined Messrs. John Banks, of Melbourne, for whom he acted as foreman for seven years.
He then purchased in 1899 a small business known as the Cornwall Foundry in Adelaide, and later transferred to new works on a larger site at Mile End.
Subsequently he purchased the old locomotive and engineering works of Messrs. James Martin and Company at Gawler and changed the combined firms' name to The Perry Engineering Company.
Mr. Perry continued to direct the affairs of the company until his death at Adelaide on 19th March 1930, his work comprising the manufacture of stationary engines and boilers, cement plants, mining machinery and locomotives and rolling stock.
He was also interested in a number of other South Australian companies and employers' and manufacturers' organizations. He was chairman of the South Australian board of directors of the Eagle, Star and British Dominions Insurance Company and was engineering delegate for the Government of South Australia to inquire into engineering projects and industrial matters generally throughout the Commonwealth, and to report thereon.
Mr. Perry, who was born in Shropshire in 1864, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922.
