SAMUEL CUTLER was chairman of Messrs. Samuel Cutler and Sons, Ltd., a position to which he succeeded on the death of his father in 1923. He was born in 1869 and was educated at Clifton College and at the Technikum in Mittweida, Saxony. After completing his pupilage in the works and drawing office of his father's firm, he was made assistant manager and superintended the installation of machinery in several gas works and the erection of gasholders, including one at Hanover, Germany, which was at the time the largest in the world.
In 1895 he was made a partner in the firm. He was particularly interested in the early application of vertical retorts in the gas industry. Later he held directorships in a large number of industrial companies, including Dry Gasholders, Ltd., the Ferro-Concrete Construction Company, Messrs. C. and W. Walker, Ltd., and various gas companies in the home counties.
He was chairman of the Council of the Society of British Gas Industries during 1919-20. Mr. Cutler possessed considerable linguistic abilities, and in connection with the firm's contracts abroad he travelled very extensively in Europe.
He was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1891 and was transferred to Membership in 1898; in addition, he was an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. His death occurred on 7th December 1937.
