The business was established by Peter Rothwell Jackson.
'Rolling Mills' refers to one of Jackson's chief products, equipment for rolling railway tyres, and not to the more common use of the term, i.e. the rolling of metal profiles.
In 1842 Jackson developed and constructed the first machine for rolling wrought iron tyres for railway wheels, patented by John George Bodmer. It worked until 1874[1]. The factory continued making such machines, and complete tyre-making plant, for many years.
Other products included cast and machined gears, pistons and piston ring steel, steel castings, and, later, dynamos and motors.
1931 Acquired by David Brown and Sons.
1985 Most production ceased.
The site has now been cleared.
