He received his general education at the Royal Portsmouth Dockyard School and served his apprenticeship in the dockyard from 1935 to 1939, where he gained a Whitworth Scholarship. He then took an engineering course at London University, where he studied with distinction, and graduated B.Sc. with first-class honours. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the R.N.V.R. with the rank of lieutenant (A.). "ROY HELLYER, B.Sc., Wh.Sc., whose untimely death on 17th April 1951 terminated a career of great promise at the early age of thirty, was elected a Student of the Institution in 1939 and transferred to Graduateship in 1945 and to Associate Membership in 1951.
