"Cdr. (E.) RONALD THOMAS FARNSWORTH, was born in 1914, and was educated at Sydney Grammar School and the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay.
He entered the Royal Naval Engineering College, Keyham, in 1932, and, after qualifying as Lieut. (E.) in 1936, took a two years' course in advanced engineering at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He then went to sea as senior watchkeeping officer in HMAS Sydney and, a year later, was appointed engineer officer in HMAS Vendetta. His next ship was the HMAS Quickmatch and on promotion to the rank of Lieut.-Cdr., in 1944, he was posted to Australia House, London, as assistant engineer officer on the liaison staff. Subsequently he was promoted to the rank of Cdr. (E.) and served in HMS Australia. Commander Farnsworth was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1946."
