Adapted from the Rolls-Royce Merlin aero-engine to drive the Cromwell tank, the Rolls-Royce Meteor engine was stated to be one of the most powerful engines fitted to any British or American tank at that time in production. Large-scale tests and use in active service in France showed that the Meteor engine was distinguished from others for its reliability, and that the cross-country performance of the vehicles fitted with it was outstanding.[1]
