ROBERT RUTHVEN MARTINDALE died at his home at Beckenham, Kent, on the 22nd July, 1948, at the age of 55. He was educated at Rutherford and Armstrong Colleges and obtained his practical training with J. H. Holmes and the Wallsend Slipway Co. In 1911 he joined the Tynemouth Electricity Department, and later the Cleveland and Durham Power Company. In 1914 he became Assistant Engineer at the Deptford East Station of the London Electric Supply Corporation. During the First World War he served with the North Russian Expeditionary Force and attained the rank of Major. He returned to his position at the Deptford Power Station in 1919, and in 1926 became Chief Assistant to the Station Superintendent. In 1932 he was appointed to a similar position at the Battersea Power Station, which included such novel features as full-scale flue-gas washing plant. In 1938 he was appointed Deputy Chief Generation Engineer, and in 1940 Chief Generation Engineer, to the London Power Company and executive assistant to Sir Leonard Pearce. When Sir Leonard died in 1947 Mr. Martindale became Chief Executive Officer to the Company. Early in 1948 he was appointed Deputy Chief Engineer (Generation) to the British Electricity Authority, and was carrying out valuable work in connection with the reorganization of the generation side of the industry.
He joined The Institution as a Student in 1912 and was elected an Associate Member in 1919 and a Member in 1948.
