ROBERT MORRISON NEILSON was the author of a number of important technical papers on power plant, and in 1904 read before the Institution a paper entitled "A Scientific Investigation into the Possibilities of Gas-Turbines." He was also the author of several books, including one on "The Steam Turbine," which passed through several editions.
He was born in 1874 and educated at Dumfries Academy, Glasgow, the West of Scotland Technical College, and Glasgow University.
He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. McOnie, Harvey and Company of Glasgow, and was later employed by Messrs. William Beardmore and Company and Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox.
For a time he acted as assistant to Professor Rowden at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. Mr. Neilson was lecturer on steam and the steam-engine at the Heginbottom Technical School, Ashton-under-Lyne.
He became an assistant to Mr. (now Sir) Dugald Clerk, at the Manchester office of Messrs. Marks and Clerk.
Among other appointments he held the post of chief of the technical department of Messrs. Richardsons, Westgarth and Company, Hartlepool.
In 1908 Mr. Neilson started in business in Glasgow as a chartered patent agent. He gained a Whitworth Exhibition in 1898.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1900 and in 1910 was transferred to Membership.
His death occurred on 16th May 1932.
