. . . commenced his business career with Smith and Ashby, an old-established firm of agricultural engineers in that town. Subsequently he was admitted into partnership, the title of the firm being altered to Ashby, Jeffery and Luke. The business was afterwards taken over by Blackstone and Co . . . The business of emery wheel making which Mr. Luke helped to found under the name of Slacks Emery Wheel and Machine Co, at Ardwick, Manchester, was subsequently changed to the title by which it is still known, Luke and Spencer. . . . Mr. Luke retired from the active management of the business about seven years ago, since which time he has held the post of chairman of the company. . . . Mr. Luke leaves a widow and one son, Mr. Robert Bendall Luke, who is a director of the firm of Luke and Spencer, Limited. The present managing director, Mr. Waterhouse, has been associated with Mr. Luke during practically the whole of the period that the firm has existed.
