ROBERT JOHN DOWLING was born in 1877 and received his education at the technical schools in Dublin, the Royal College of Science, London, and the City and Guilds Central Technical College. In 1892 he began a seven years' apprenticeship in the engineering workshops of the Dublin Port and Docks Board, in whose service he continued to the end of his professional career, which extended over forty years.
During this long period he successively filled the positions of draughtsman, clerk of works, chief engineering draughtsman, and finally chief assistant civil engineer. In addition, for some years, he acted as teacher to evening classes at the Dublin Municipal Technical Schools. Mr. Dowling, whose death occurred on 10th November 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920.
