"Captain ROBERT JOHN BALL BONNEY, R.E.M.E., whose death in action was presumed to have occurred in December 1941, at the age of forty-six, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1920 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1941. He served his apprenticeship with Messrs. John I. Thornycroft, Ltd., of Southampton from 1911 to 1914, and also in 1919, and during the same periods attended the Hartley Engineering College. In 1914 he joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and was employed at the base workshops for five years. After a temporary appointment as draughtsman and constructional engineer to the Red Line Petrol Company, Ltd., he rejoined the R.A.O.C., and served as ordnance artificer, rising to be foreman of workshops. Subsequently he was made mechanical draughtsman, and was engaged on the design of a new workshop at Quetta, India. In 1935 he obtained his warrant rank and three years later as assistant Ordnance Mechanical Engineer, was placed in charge of the boys' training school at Aldershot. In 1939 he was posted to the ordnance workshops as officer in charge, and finally was appointed senior Ordnance Mechanical Engineer for the Hong Kong area."
