"Lt.-Colonel ROBERT GEORGE BAMFORD, V.D., was a locomotive engineer, who spent nearly the whole of his professional career in India.
He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and served his time from 1881 to 1887 in the locomotive workshops of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway at Manchester and Horwich, on the completion of which he was engaged as a draughtsman for the next five years. He began his connection with India in 1892 with his appointment as chief draughtsman in the locomotive, carriage, and wagon department of the Madras Railway. Eventually he rose to be chief mechanical engineer, a position he retained until his retirement in 1921. Colonel Bamford was a Member of the Institution for half a century, having been elected in 1898. His death occurred on 9th August 1948, in his eighty-third year."
