Robert Ernest Atkinson (1870-1931), managing director of Ashwell and Nesbit

1931 Obituary [1]

ROBERT ERNEST ATKINSON read a Paper before the Institution in 1902 on "The Standardization of Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings." He took out several patents in connexion with thermostatic regulation, some of his inventions still being in operation at a number of large public institutions. He was greatly interested in steam consumption and economy, and in particular thermostatic interposition and regulation as applied to warming apparatus, using steam at below atmospheric pressure as the medium.

He was born at Leicester in 1870 and received his early training in the drawing office of Mr. Frank Ashwell. On the formation of the firm of Messrs. Ashwell and Nesbit he became managing director.

His death occurred on 17th December 1931.

He was keenly interested in technical education and for many years was a member of the engineering committee of the Leicester Technical School.

Mr. Atkinson had been a Member of the Institution since 1897.
