Road Board
1909 Established in response to the need to develop an effective road system in the face of expanding motor transport. The board was given powers to finance improvements to existing roads and to build new ones.
1910 Sir George Gibb was appointed chairman.
Over 90 per cent of the moneys disbursed by the Board were for the purposes of improvements, which solved the problem of dust, but led to criticism that network development was being downplayed.
The board became unpopular because of its lack of direct accountability to Parliament
1919 The Ministry of Transport was formed so the Board lapsed.
