Richborough Power Station
1958 The Central Electricity Generating Board started construction of the power station
1962 Unit 1 came online
1963 Unit 2 came online
The station had 336 MW capacity, burning coal from the East Kent coalfield and elsewhere.
1971 Converted to burn oil
1989 An experimental 1 MW wind turbine (the largest in the UK at that time) was installed
1989 Converted to burn a proprietary heavy oil and water emulsion called Orimulsion, imported from Venezuela through Port Richborough.
After growing concerns about the environmental effects of using the Orimulsion fuel, court action was taken twice, both cases being settled out of court.
1994 One of the turbo-alternators was decommissioned, reducing the output capacity to 228 MW.
1996 The station ceased generating electricity
