Richard Garrett III (1807–1866) of Richard Garrett and Sons

General

1807 Born on 1 February 1807 at Leiston the son of Richard Garrett (1779-1837) and his wife Sarah

1826 Aged nineteen he took over responsibility for the finances of the engineering works later known as Richard Garrett and Sons.

1828 October 4th. Richard Garrett, the younger, Iron Merchant of Leiston married Elizabeth (1806-84) the eldest daughter of John Dunnall, wine merchant of Crawford Street, London, at St. Maty-le-Bone New Church [1]

1829 July 22nd. Birth of son Richard

They had a total of four sons and five daughters

1836 He took over general management of the business from his father.

1837 His father dies and a notice in the paper concerns his taking over of the firm of Leiston General Iron Works with establishments at Leiston, Saxmundham, Yoxford, ???worth and Saxtead. He founded the Camden Brewery, in north London. [2]

1841 Richard (age 30), Iron Merchant, is living at Leiston with his mother Sarah (age 60), his wife Elizabeth (age 30) and their children Betsy (age 5), Sarah (age 3), Ellen (age 2) and Jane (age 1) [3]

1844 Death of Robert Gayford, their infant son [4]

1851 Living at Leiston (age 44 born Leiston), Agricultural Implement Maker employing 324 men and boys, Farmer of 260 acres employing 15 men and women. With wife Elizabeth (age 45 born Toddington, Mddx), Sarah his widowed mother (age 75 born Rumburgh, Suffolk) and children Richard (age 21 born Leiston), Betsy (age 15), Sarah (age 13), Ellen (age 12), Jane (age 11), Henry (age 9), Clara (age 8) and Frank (age 5) plus a governess and five servants. [5]

1861 Living at Carlton Hall, Suffolk (age 54 born Leiston), Agricultural Implement Maker and occupier of 190 acres employing 450 men and 100 boys. With wife Elizabeth (age 55 born London) and children Richard (age 31 born Leiston), Sarah Louisa (age 23 born Leiston), Jane Emma (age 21), Henry M. (age 19), Clara (age 18) plus four visitors and eight servants. [6]

In 1855 he retired from management of the engineering works

1866 June 26th. He died at Carlton Hall[7] and was buried in Carlton churchyard.

1884 March 30th. Death of Elizabeth (age 78) the widow of Richard Garrett at Shern Hall, Walthamstow, the home of her daughter Mrs. G. A. Grimshaw [8]

  • Frank b.1846
