Richard Garrett (1779-1837) of Richard Garrett and Sons
1779 August 4th. Born at Leiston the son of Richard Garrett and Elizabeth nee Newson
1805 He took over the management of the forge that later became Richard Garrett and Sons
1806 Married Sarah, daughter of John Balls of Hethersett, near Norwich, who had patented an early form of threshing machine.
Garrett and his father-in-law John Balls began to manufacture threshing machines at Leiston and the firm began to grow.
They had three sons, Richard, Balls, and Newson.

1822 Jonathan Mills of Harleston, Ironmonger assigns his business to Richard Garrett, Junior. [2]
1826 Mariage at St. George Hanover Square, London of Elizabeth the second daughter of Richard Garrett of Leiston to John Williams of London [3]
1826 Described as an Iron Merchant [4]
1833 June 24th. Death at Leiston of Edmund, the youngest son of R. Garrett, Junior, Iron Merchant, being one of the fourth generation of that family now living in the above parish, and his funeral attended by Richard Garrett, his brother, Richard Garrett, his father, Richard Garrett, his grand-father and Richard Garrett, Senior, his great grand-father. 1837 By the time Richard died on 6 June 1837 at Leiston there were about sixty employees.
1841 Sarah is living at Leiston (age 60) with son Richard (age 30), Iron Merchant, his wife Elizabeth (age 30), and their children Betsy (age 5), Sarah (age 3), Ellen (age 2) and John (age 1) [6]
1851 His widow age 75 is living with their son Richard [7]
1851 November 29th. Death of Sarah age 79 [8]
