RICHARD CHARLES THOMPSON was born at Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, on 18th August 1857.
He entered the shipbuilding and engineering business of his father, namely Robert Thompson and Sons, Ltd., Sunderland, and in course of time became its Chairman.
He was also a director of Webster and Co., Ltd., Deptford, rope manufacturers, of the Wear Portland Cement Co., Ltd., and of other concerns, and represented his firm at the Wear Shipbuilders' Association.
He was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Durham, and for twenty-one years acted as Consular Agent for France in Sunderland.
His death took place at Newcastle-on-Tyne on 2nd August 1918, in his sixty-first year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1883.
