1851 Julius Reuter moved to London and set up an office in the Royal Exchange Buildings. He made use of the new Dover–Calais cable to transmit economic information, which he sold to clients. He then started a news service which was taken by some European papers.
1858 It was not for some years that his news service was accepted by British newspapers.
1865 To raise funds for laying a cable directly to Germany, Julius floated Reuters as a public company and took the position of MD.
1865 Agreement with government of Prussia to lay a direct cable from England to Germany[1].
1866 The Lowestoft-Norderney cable was laid, with 4 separate wires, and was operating immediately[2].
1869 The line to Germany was taken over by the Post Office[3]; a special case had been made for Reuter's in the Acts of Parliament[4]; the company made a large profit.
1870 Reuter formed a worldwide news agency cartel with Havas in Paris and Wolff in Germany, which survived until the 1930s
