REUBEN JAMES COOK was for nearly fifty years connected with Messrs. Thornycroft, both at their Chiswick works, and after their removal to Woolston, Hants. He supervised for many years the installation of machinery on the vessels constructed by the firm. In addition he went to India and Burma in the service of the Government and later also carried out work in Spain. In 1890 he took charge of the machine and erecting shops at Chiswick, and after the firm's removal in 1906 to Woolston he was appointed superintendent of the machine shops. He was responsible for various inventions in connexion with machines for the manufacture of water-tube boilers.
Mr. Cook was born in 1853 and served his apprenticeship from 1867 to 1873 in the Royal Laboratory, Woolwich Arsenal. He then spent brief periods with various firms, including Messrs. Campbell and Johnson of Silvertown and Messrs. Henley's, of North Woolwich, before joining Messrs. Thornycroft.
In 1923 he retired, and lived at Egham, where he died on 15th February 1935.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1902.
