REGINALD CANNON went to South Africa in 1897, where he spent the greater part of his life.
He was born in Kent in 1872 and articled at the Acton Hill engineering works, Acton.
He subsequently gained further experience with Messrs. Fraser and Chalmers, Messrs. Easton, Anderson and Goolden, and at the Maxim Nordenfeldt works at Erith before going abroad.
His first appointment in South Africa was with the Geldenhuis Deep Gold Mining Company. Later he became assistant engineer on the Cape Town harbour works. During the Boer War he joined the Cape Colony Defence Corps and served on the frontiers of the Colony. At its termination he established himself as a consulting engineer in Johannesburg, where he carried out work for some of the large mining companies. He also prepared a large-scale map of the Transvaal Colony which was published in London.
At the outbreak of the War in 1914 he came to England and was appointed production officer at the Vickers works near Weybridge.
He went again to Africa after the War and travelled extensively until he finally returned to England about four years ago.
Mr. Cannon became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1904 and a Member in 1918.
He died on 21st December 1930.
