"PERCY STUART JOHNSON was born in 1881 and educated at the Grammar School and technical institutes in Dudley. His apprenticeship was served at the Langley Engineering Works of [[Hughes Johnson and Co|Hughes Johnson and Company, Ltd.]], Birmingham, from 1896 to 1899, and with [[Thornewill and Warham]], Burton-on-Trent, from 1900 to 1902. After three years of experience as draughtsman and assistant to [[Muntz's Metal Co|Muntz Metal Company, Ltd.]], Birmingham, he secured an appointment in 1906 as assistant works engineer to [[William Hunt and Sons]], Brades Steel Works, Birmingham, and subsequently was promoted to the post of works engineer.
