PERCY FREDERICK HOLMES who was born in 1859, was a leading figure in the gas industry and was identified throughout his career with the Huddersfield firm founded by his father, W. C. Holmes.
Mr. P. F. Holmes was educated at Rossall School, and served his apprenticeship from 1876 to 1881 in the drawing office and works of his father's firm, and for the next two years superintended the outdoor erection of the firm's manufactures. He became a partner in 1883 and took over the management of the business, and subsequently, on its conversion into a limited company, was appointed chairman and governing director, a position he held until within a few months of his death which occurred on 9th February 1941.
He was also a director of Messrs. Bryan, Donkin, Ltd., of Chesterfield. In addition he was a former chairman of the Society of British Gas Industries and a vice-president of the British Commercial Gas Association. In 1929, in conjunction with Mr. D. M. Henshaw, he founded a scholarship at Leeds University tenable by a student taking a course in preparation for a position as a gas engineer. In later life Mr. Holmes took a keen interest in public and charitable institutions in Huddersfield to which he devoted much of his time.
Mr. Holmes had been a Member of the Institution since 1896.
