"PERCY EDWIN BECK was born in 1890 and received his technical education at the University College, Nottingham, and at the City and Guilds Technical College, Finsbury, where he took a course in electrical engineering. Finally he received instruction in gas-works practice at the Birmingham Municipal Technical School. On the completion of a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Manlove, Alliott and Company, Ltd., in 1912, he was employed throughout the rest of his career as a draughtsman and designer. Amongst the numerous positions he filled were those of assistant designer at the Admiralty Gunwharf, Portsmouth; chief draughtsman in the marine auxiliaries drawing office of Messrs. Workman Clarke and Company, of Belfast; and designer in the submarine and paravane department of Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., at Barrow-in-Furness. From 1930 to 1936 he was chief draughtsman to Messrs. B. Laporte, Ltd., chemical manufacturers, of Luton, with responsibility for the engineering and structural side, including new work and the ordering of machinery.
After holding a temporary appointment as first-class draughtsman to the Port of London Authority he entered the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich as a senior mechanical draughtsman. Mr. Beck, whose death occurred on 15th March 1946, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1934."
