Paul Richard Kuehnrich (c1871-1932) of Darwin and Milner and later Darwins

1932 Obituary [1]

PAUL R. KUEHNRICH died on April 28, 1932.

He came to Sheffield from Germany when seventeen years of age, and was naturalised six years later. His earliest Sheffield association was with March Bros. & Co., first as traveller and afterwards as manager.

Later he acquired the title of Darwin and Milner, Ltd., and under his leadership a number of other firms were taken over.

In 1924, the Simplex Motor Works, Sheffield, were secured, and the manufacture of safety-razor blades was commenced. Two years later the original Darwins, Ltd., took over the concern, and the safety-razor blades were now produced on mass-production lines.

Mr. Kuehnrich retired from the position of managing director in 1929 when the firm was reconstructed, but remained on the board in an advisory capacity. Many patents stand in Mr. Kuehnrich's name; the first, dated 1906, related to a rotating electric furnace, designed to enable steel to be teemed direct into the ingot moulds. Most of his later patents were concerned with stainless and corrosion-resisting steels.

He joined the Iron and Steel Institute in 1905.
