c.1850 Listed as Engineers and Tool Makers, Alport Town, Manchester. 'Alport Town' was the name of short street linking Deansgate and Watson Street. Below its length ran the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal.

EDWARD RUSHTON & SON are in receipt of instructions to SELL BY AUCTION on Monday, March 12th. 1888, on the premises, Red Bank Ironworks, Red Bank, Manchester (recently occupied by Messrs. Oldham and Richards, the valuable new and nearly new ENGINEERING TOOLS and EFFECTS, comprising treble geared gap lathe, 12½ in. centre on 24ft. bed, with gap to take in 48in. diameter, 12in, wide; double geared gap lathe, l0in. centre, 20ft. bed; 12 double geared and single speed hand lathes, from 7in. to 12½ in. centres: two lathe beds, each 33ft. long: powerful self-acting planing machine to plane 16ft. by 4ft 3in. by 4ft. high, with two tool boxes on cross slide and self-acting in all cuts; new self-acting machine, to plane 6ft. By 2ft. 6in. By 2ft. 6in., fitted with all latest improvements; two ditto, to plane 4ft, by 2ft. by 2ft. EDWARD RUSHTON & SON are instructed to SELL BY AUCTION, on Monday next, March 12th, 1888, on the premises as above, The STEAM BOILER, STEAM ENGINE, SHAFTING, &c. comprising excellent single-flued high-pressure steam boiler, 15ft. long, 6ft. 6in. dia., by Tinker, Shenton, and Co., Hyde, 1882, insured at 65 lbs.; vertical steam engine, 12in. cylinder, 28in. stroke, with fly wheel 9ft. dia.. governors, pump, and strong framework; wrought-iron water cistern, 14ft. by 4ft. 2in. by 5ft. 6in. deep: wrought-iron water heater, 6ft. By 2ft. 5in. by 2ft. l0in. deep; force pump, range of 4inu. cast-iron piping, 270 ft. of polished wrought-iron shafting, 3in. and 2½ dia., with bevel wheels, pulleys, hangers, &c; 240ft. of deal planking, 12in. by 3in., with iron hangers; two pairs wrought-iron doors, powerful treble purchase power-geared iron hoisting crab, with barrel, 43in. wide, 10in. dia., and 1in. hoist chain to lift 20tons; and other property.
