NORMAN GIBB was born in London on 26th June 1883.
His early education was received in London and at King Edward VI Grammar School, Stratford-on-Avon.
In 1900 he attended classes at the Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and began an apprenticeship at the North Eastern Railway Locomotive Works, after which he remained with the Company as chief inspector of their Carriage and Wagon Works, and subsequently as locomotive inspector and running shed foreman at York.
In 1909 he was appointed deputy locomotive superintendent on the Federated Malay States Railways at Kuala Lumpur, and for a year was Acting Locomotive Superintendent.
In 1912 he returned to England and became Assistant Divisional Locomotive Superintendent on the North Eastern Railway. This position he held for two years, when he received the appointment of Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Royal Siamese State Railways, Southern Line, Bangkok.
In 1920 he returned to England on furlough, and some months afterwards, in view of the state of his health, he resigned his appointment.
He went to South Africa on a business mission in 1922, and his death took place from malarial fever in the Transvaal on 29th April 1923,in his fortieth year.
He became a Graduate of this Institution in 1906, an Associate Member in 1910, and a Member in 1915.
