NICOLAI IVANOVIC STEPANOV. Professor N. I. Stepanov died in Leningrad on May 19, 1938, at the age of 59.
At the time of his death Professor Stepanov held the post of Professor of General and Physical Chemistry at the Mining Institute, Leningrad, at which Institute he had himself been educated. In 1910 he was awarded the Mendeleeff prize by the Russian Physico-Chemical Society.
Since 1920 he had been Vice-Director of the Institute of Physico-Chemical Analysis of the Academy of Science, whose degree of D.Chem. he received in 1935. Most of Professor Stepanov's recent work in the field of metallurgy was concerned with the theoretical and mathematical aspects of equilibrium diagrams.
Professor Stepanov was elected a member of the Institute of Metals on January 23, 1930.
