Newton, Keates and Co

1832 Newton, Lyon and Co had rolling mills in Flintshire, and decided to become smelters. They engaged William Keates, who built the Sutton Smelting Works near St Helens Junction in 1832, trading as Newton, Keates & Co [1]

The 1849 OS map [2] shows the factory to be a narrow building running from Deansgate to the River Irwell, close to the north east end of Deansgate.

1850 Copper roller makers [3].

1860 Messrs Newton, Keates and Co had a smelter at Bagillt, Flintshire[4].


William Keates was a key figure in establishing copper smelting in Lancashire.

1830 Keates started the Ravenhead Copper Works, smelting copper ore from Arosa in Venezuela.

1838 the works were sold to John Bibby and Co.
