Note: This is a sub-section of Napier

One of the first turbo-compound engines - a gas turbine engine with 2-stroke Diesel generator

The Nomad II had a 12-cylinder two-stroke Diesel engine in 2 six-cylinder blocks, which served as gas generators for the gas turbine. Both the Diesel and the gas turbine contributed shaft power to the propellor via a complicated gearing.

By 1955 the high weight (in relation to thrust) and complexity of this engine compared with the turbojet had led to its demise.
