Miller Christy (1748-1820) of Christy and Co, Hat Manufacturers, Furriers, and Skinners
1748 Born the son of John Christy (1707-61), of Ormiston Lodge, Edinburgh, and his wife Mary Miller
Over a seven year apprenticeship Miller Christy learnt the "art and mystery of feltmaking".
1773 Company established in London by Miller Christy, presumably with Joseph Storrs
1773 William Danson, water bailiff, introduced Miller Christy into the Company of Felt Makers, the second of three granted to him in recompense for providing the Company's Watermen with Coats, caps and Badges[1]
1794 Joseph Storrs left the business which was carried on by Miller.
He then brought his 2 elder sons into the business.
c1803 Miller Christy seems to have retired from the business he founded.
The business continued under his sons Thomas (1776-1846), William (1778-1858) and John (1781-1873) and their heirs. By 1812 Miller had succeeded to his father’s freehold estates.
1820 June 12th. Died at Croydon.
