1857 The company was formed by John Watkins Brett in order to link Malta with the French and Italian land systems via a cable from Sardinia to Malta.

R. S. Newall and Co were contracted to manufacture and lay the cable, which ran from Sardinia to Malta and on to Corfu.

Later a cable was laid from Corfu to Otranto, Italy.

1859 The Malta cable failed. Glass, Elliot and Co were contracted to lay a cable linking Sicily and Malta.

1861 The Corfu cable failed.

1868 The Anglo-Mediterranean Telegraph Co, set up by John Pender, took over the concessions of the company.
