Matthew Pollock Bain had been a junior partner in the Beaver Proud Engineering Company of Valparaiso since 1917, a position which followed many years' experience in the Chilean naval Offices.
He was born in Glasgow, of a well known engineering family; his uncle James Bain was a former superintendent engineer of the Cunard line.
From 1881 to 1884 he received his technical education at Allen Glen's Technical School, Glasgow, after which he commenced a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Barclay, Curle and Company, engineers and shipbuilders. He was then employed in the drawing office of that firm until 1891, when he went to sea as second engineer on Messrs. G. and J. Burns's mail steamships.
After a further short period in the drawing office of Messrs. Barclay, Curle, he was appointed chief engineering draughtsman and assistant to Mr. Humphrey Gilbert, and later to Mr. H. C. Anstey, M.I.Mech.E., who successively filled the position of inspector-general of machinery of the Chilean Navy at Valparaiso. Mr. Bain held this position until 1916. He was responsible for the design of the dock-pumping plant, the fuel-oil plant, and the new power station at the naval dockyard at Talcahuano, and for the entire designs of the Meteoro, launched in 1901, which was the largest vessel built there up to that date. He designed in addition two powerful twin-screw tugs, and mooring lighters of a special type for work in Chilean harbours.
