Marshall Porter Croxford (1900-1941)

1941 Obituary [1]

MARSHALL PORTER CROXFORD was born in Natal in 1900 and educated at Jeppe High School, Johannesburg, and at Witwatersrand University, where he graduated B.Sc. in 1931. After serving his apprenticeship from 1919 to 1925 in various works, and undergoing a student course with the Almanna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget, Sweden, he was employed on estimating and quotation work in the Export Department of the Swedish General Electric Company in London until 1927, when he joined the Perak River Hydro-Electric Power Company at Ipoh, Perak, F.M.S.

He remained with that firm until his death, which was the result of a flying accident, on 20th August 1940. As assistant electrical and mechanical engineer, he supervised the construction of an 18,000 kW. steam power station, and from 1930 to 1934 he was district engineer-in-charge of substations, transmission lines, and consumers' equipment, covering a large area. He was next appointed distribution superintendent and was directly responsible to the general manager for the distribution system of the company, at that time supplying at the rate of 200,000,000 units per annum. Mr. Croxford, who was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1936, was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
