Iron Founders and bar iron makers.
1832 The following article is assumed to refer to M Wheatley & Co.: 'Explosion of a Steam Boiler.—About noon Saturday last, the boiler of steam engine at Messrs. Wheatley and Co.'s iron forge, Swirle, Sandgate, Newcastle, exploded with tremendous violence. The top and sides of the boiler separating from the bottom, forced their way through the roof of the forge, and after ascending to great height in the air, came down on to and broke through the roof of Messrs. Angus and Co.'s bonding warehouse on the opposite side of the street. Such a spectacle was scarcely ever beheld. Bricks, stones, wood, steam, &c., flew in every direction at the moment of the explosion, and carried destruction with them. One person had his head fractured, another his thigh broken, and several were severely scalded. The sufferers were not alone those who were in the forge, but persons who happened to in the street or at the riverside at the time the boiler burst.'[1]
