Established in 1856 by Michael Henry Gill (Owner of the Dublin University Press from about 1842 to 1875), under the title of McGlashan and Gill which in 1875 became M. H. Gill and Son.

In 1968, the company became associated with the London based Macmillan Publishers (founded 1843) and Gill & Macmillan was established. In 2013, the Gill family bought out Macmillan.[1]
