Liverpool Gas Light Co

1816 The Liverpool Gas Light Company was created by Jonathan Varty, a coach builder, and the engineer John Hargreaves.

1818 The company obtained a Charter of Incorporation by Act of Parliament. The company was responsible for lighting the Town Hall. Its first works were on Dale St.

1823 the rival Oil Gas Company was created to produce gas from whale oil only. It was assigned different areas of supply including Everton, Kirkdale and West Derby.

1834 the restriction on the Oil Gas Company was repealed and it was allowed to make gas from coal. Its name also changed to Liverpool New Gas and Coke Co.

1848 For 25 years there was rivalry between the 2 companies before they were amalgamated as Liverpool United Gas Co.
