Leffert Lefferts Buck (1837-1909)
1909 Obituary [1]
LEFFERT LEFFERTS BUCK, born at Canton, New York, in 1837, died at Hastings-on-Hudson on the 17th July, 1909, aged 72.
At the time of his death he was engaged in erecting the Manhattan Bridge over the East River at New York.
In early life he was employed on the Croton Aqueduct, and later, on railway and bridge construction in Peru, Mexico, and in New Jersey and other States of the Union.
Although he built many bridges, including the Verrugas Viaduct, at that time the highest in the world, he will probably be best remembered for his work at Niagara Falls, where he was concerned in the design and erection of the highway suspension bridge, the Grand Trunk railway bridge and the Niagara Falls and Clifton steel arch.
Mr. Buck was elected a Member of The Institution on the 6th December, 1898.
