The patents of Andrew Lamb and W. A. Summers of Southampton, especially for a boiler with narrow, vertical flat-sided flues instead of tubes, an arrangement that was easier to keep clear of soot and fine ashes. It was used particularly in P&O vessels in the 1850s.
