A type og primary battery, promoted in the late 19th century as suitable for domestic uses (e.g. lighting).
The cell consisted of a zinc positive element, a caustic alkali in aqueous solution as electrolyte, and a negative electrode of iron in contact with copper oxide. It suffered from the disadvantage of a low emf of 0.9 volt (not to mention the consumption of zinc involved in providing domestic lighting).
