Major KENNETH ROBERT SMITH MOORLEY, R.A.O.C., whose death occurred on active service on 15th August 1942, became a Graduate of the Institution in 1937 and was transferred to Associate Membership as recently as October 1941.
He was born in 1914 and entered the locomotive works of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, at Derby, in 1931; and on completing his apprenticeship in 1936 underwent further training in the motive power department. In the meantime he received his technical training at Derby Technical College, and later attended courses in works organization at Wolverhampton Technical College. From 1937 until 1939 he was assistant to the district locomotive superintendent.
He then joined Messrs. Rolls-Royce and was employed as technical assistant in the aeroplane works. In the same year he obtained his commission and was promoted captain in the R.A.O.C. while in France, where he served from the outbreak of war until the evacuation from Dunkirk. He was promoted to the rank of major in February 1942.
