Joseph Lindsay was chief engineer at [[Gilroy Brothers]], Tay Works while those mills were being built. When they were nearly finished, he set up on his own in 1865 on land provided by his partner [[William Walton Urquhart|William Urquhart]], whose family had previously used the land as a seed nursery.
