JOSEPH EDEN, born on the 2nd December, 1839, was a native of Durham, and at an early age entered the employment of Harrison Hodgson, contractor, continuing therein until the death of that gentleman in 1879, when he transferred his services to R. H. Hodgson, the son of his former employer.

For some years before his death, he was engaged in private practice in Workington, where, in addition to other work, he was responsible for the design and construction of the Corporation waterworks.
Mr. Eden took a keen interest in municipal affairs, serving on the Local Board and the Town Council, and also on the Technical Committee. He was a prominent local Freemason and founded the Eden Lodge in Workington.
He died suddenly of heart failure at Manchester on the 25th April, 1904, in his sixty-fifth year.
Mr. Eden was elected an Associate Member of the Institution on the 19th May, 1885.
