John and Charles Baring and Co
Elizabeth Baring [née Vowler], (1702–1766), wool manufacturer and merchant, was born on 30 April 1702 in Exeter, the only daughter of John Vowler, grocer, and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Townsend.
Two interlocking partnerships were formed by two of her sons on Christmas day 1762, one in Exeter, the other in London.
John was to be head of both houses, but the west country business of John and Charles Baring and Co was to be managed by Charles.
Francis was in charge of John and Francis Baring and Co in London, from which was to emerge the merchant banking house of Barings.
