"Col. JOHN WORTLEY OWEN.. R.A.S.C., ret., was born in 1888 and educated at Marlborough College. After serving a short apprenticeship with Brown and May, Ltd., Devizes, engineers, he entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and, on passing out, received a commission in the West Indian Regiment. He transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps in 1914 and saw much service abroad, being in command of motor transport units in France, Egypt, Palestine, and Syria until 1920. In the following year he took a mechanical engineering course at the works of Charles Burrell and Sons, Ltd., Thetford, Norfolk.
In 1925 he was posted to Belfast, where for the next three years he was officer-in-charge of workshops. After acting as inspector of motor transport at the War Office, Col. Owen was given the appointment of officer-in-charge, Royal Army Service Corps, Bermuda Command. He saw further service overseas during the 1939-45 war, when he rose to the rank of colonel. Col. Owen was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1922 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1933."
