JOHN WILTON CUNINGHAME HALDANE was born at Hobart Town, Tasmania, on 11th June 1833, and was a second cousin of Viscount Haldane.
In 1843 he came over to Edinburgh, where he received his education.
He served his apprenticeship as an engineer with Messrs. Denny and Co., Dumbarton, and then removed to Liverpool, where he practised for thirty years as consulting engineer, devoting much of his time to writing books on Engineering and kindred subjects. One of his most interesting books was "Thirty thousand miles across Canada."
About 1904 he went to live at Hampstead, London, where he wrote several other books, notably "The Life of an Engineer."
His death, after a long illness, took place on the 1st July 1914, at the age of eighty-one.
He was elected a Member of this Institution in 1897; he was also a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
